Dating Safety & Tips

Online dating isn't any different from offline dating when it comes to playing it safe. When first meeting someone, no matter how you were introduced, the most important thing to do is use lots of common sense and act responsibly.

ASM provides a safe and confidential/anonymous environment where members can meet each other. No one will ever learn your real identity or any of your personal information until you choose to reveal it.

When is a good time to reveal my personal information?

Follow your gut and a few suggested guidelines and your online dating experience should be safe and fun:

  • Set up an email account dedicated to online dating.

When you decide to exchange private email addresses, using a dedicated address still assures some sense of privacy.

  • Keep it online at first.

Some people will want to take your communications offline right away and will ask for a personal email or phone number.

It's a good idea to first exchange some information with each other, so you can get a "feel" for the person's intentions. If another member is sending 1-2 sentence emails without revealing any personal info to you, this could be a red flag. Ask about it.

  • Ask lots of questions.

Watch for evasive or inconsistent answers. Is this person hiding something? After all, the whole point is getting to know each other. It's best to begin getting basic information on someone during your anonymous email exchanges. If someone won't reveal more information until you give a private phone or email, ask why.

  • Gentle persistence can be charming, but pressure is a red flag.

There's an art to online dating. Some people become really good at picking up cues and might figure out quickly that you are a great catch ... so this person might seem particularly eager to "get going." If you're not ready and this person has integrity, s/he won't mind waiting until you are ready.

But, if you sense that this person isn't giving up a lot, but is pressuring you for more personal information or to meet quickly, then ignore him/her.

Only reveal personal info or arrange to meet when your intuition tells you it's the right time.

If you are feeling harassed or unsafe with another member, feel free to contact us and we will look further into it with you. We want you to feel safe and happy here.

  • Watch for solicitations inside emails.

Don't let people lure you onto their websites to sell you something or to make toll phone calls. Please inform us if you encounter these kinds of solicitations.

  • Ask for a photo.

If someone won't reveal a photo to you during private communications or before you meet in person, this person might be trying to hide something. It's pretty common these days for people to post photos, if someone won't send you one, ask why not.

  • Be smart before you meet in person.

    • Get the person's phone number and have a phone conversation before you meet. It develops another level of trust.

    • Meet and talk in a public place.

    • Before you leave for your date, give your date's personal information to a trusted friend (first & last name, phone number and the location of your date). Arrange to communicate with your friend when the date is over.

    • Use your own transportation to get to your meeting place and home.

    • Don't be afraid to change your mind. If something just doesn't feel right to you, pay attention to this feeling. This is your intuition talking to you!

    • No matter how much intimacy you share in your online communications with someone, you are NOT obligated to meet anyone in person!

    • There is no such thing as embarrassment when it comes to safety. If you don't feel safe during your date, ask for help from someone who is nearby or leave on your own.

    • If you are traveling to meet someone, take the same precautions as though you were meeting in your hometown.

  • Avoid pre-first date temptation.

Sometimes we have exciting and powerful email and phone exchanges with someone before we've even met. This connection feels so strong, we develop an affection and trust for this person. S/he feels like "the one."

While it's important to trust your intuition (and feel relaxed), it's also important to keep a sense of sanity with you before the first date.

Before you leave the house, you might feel like a weekend in Tahoe for the first date won't be long enough. But, then you meet for the first time. Sadly, you discover that you two don't have physical chemistry. It's a bummer... and not to mention an uncomfortable situation (and potentially unsafe) if you've got 2 more days and nights together.

So, take it slow. It can't hurt to shorten the length of your first date to meeting for a coffee or a drink instead (watch your alcohol intake so your judgment isn't impaired).

If the sparks are flying and you are feeling perfectly safe, you can always scoot home to pack your bags for the rest of the weekend.

  • Be honest. (About everything!)

Until we meet each other, we can never know if the physical attraction is there.

If you're not feeling attracted to your date, that's okay. The world would feel chaotic if we were all attracted to each other. But, when you figure it out, do the right thing and communicate it.

Say something nice and then tell the person you don't feel the chemistry or a romantic connection. It's the kindest thing you can do. This site is intended for adults. There's never a good reason to make anyone guess about how you feel. Your honesty might then easily transition you two into a great friendship.

You'll find someone. Be open to all the possibilities.

2. ASM — How it Works & Content

How ASM Works

    Why music?

Music is everywhere. In our assorted & diverse lives we share the common experience of music.

But, we don't all like the same music. And, we don't all respond to music in the same way.

There are many reasons for the way we each respond differently to music. Possible factors include our primal instinct, the nurturing we received as children, body sensitivity, education and intellectualism. These factors are all pieces in the puzzle that forms our music personality.

Our individual music preferences reveal a lot about our individual personalities. Or... music speaks volumes about us.

Whether we have our MP3 player attached to our hip (literally) or we listen to one radio show a week, we all make distinct choices about the music we want in our lives.

Amazingly, we each have distinct personality traits that are in common with and compatible with the traits of other people who like music in a similar way.

When we group together people with similar "music personalities," we are bringing together people with similar personality traits. That they would get along with each other is no wonder.

    The ASM process

If you like U2, do you relate to everyone who also likes U2? Doubtful.

This service isn't about matching people who both like the same band.

ASM is about matching people who have a similar appreciation for music.

When matching people, ASM presents a "compatibility indicator" showing you 1 to 4 notes. The 4-note symbols you see on members' profiles indicate that these people offer the highest likelihood of compatibility, 3-notes offer a good likelihood of compatibility, and so on down the scale.

    See our compatibility indicator.

Of course, the music we like is important. By looking at the music section of a member's profile you will not only learn everything you want to know about his or her music tastes and preferences, but also you can immediately hear the music.

You could get a 4-note match (high likelihood) with someone who likes different music than you. That's fine, even great. As long as you know this person appreciates music the same way you do, you know that you two will be able to relate on a variety of levels.

Even if the romance sparks aren't flying, you're likely to get turned on to some great new music. This is because you're 3-4 note matches are on your wavelength. They respond to life in a similar way and choose their music the same way you do. Stay open. You might meet your new best friend.

    And, who am I?

I'm just a girl who's been in love with music her whole life. I listen to a lot of music as often as possible, and my tastes are wide-ranging.

For most of my professional life I worked in the music business. If it had not been for my years working with music industry colleagues, I would never have had the chance to observe the variety of music personalities that exist.

And I am confident calling myself an expert dater. I've been at it for 20 plus years now and I have lots (and lots) of dating and relationship stories under my belt.

(And, I'd like to thank my parents for being so wonderfully patient about all of this.) :-)

A Sound Match was created by someone in the same shoes as you. And by someone who can vouch that it works. I'm here to say... music can predict compatibility between us. Music can help find you your Sound Match.

I haven't been on a bad date in years. This is because no date escapes taking the music test before we go out! I feel great about sharing with you the ASM Music Personality Test & Methodology, a.k.a... your very own bad-date repellent.

    The research

Many years ago I began collecting music test results from couples I knew. Over and over again I saw a correlation between the couples' test scores and the strength of their relationships.

Couples who scored closer together got along the best. Over 85% of the time, couples in healthy, long-term relationships scored within a 10% range of one another. I already knew this from my own relationships. But, when I finally graphed out on paper the results of friends and family's relationships, I was thrilled to see my theory supported by all the data I had gathered. Knowing I was on to something great gave me the encouragement (and stamina) to keep going.

Many years went into research, development, and testing and refining the tools that could identify and match similar Music Personalities. Along this road, thankfully, the theory proved itself time and time again, keeping me in pursuit of further development. I'm excited to now bring it out into the world and to you.

    Now what?

In 3 minutes, the ASM Music Personality Test will measure your interest in music and send your Sound Matches to you, ranked by level of compatibility.

Check out the profiles and listen to the music of your sound matches. My hope is that you will be pleasantly surprised by how much it all resonates with you.

Become a member and give yourself a big head start in finding someone who not only "gets" you, but who might just be the love of your life.

At a bare minimum, have a kick-ass time exchanging music with each other.

A Sound Match Music Personality Test

ASM Music Personality Test measures a person's interest in music. It does not measure taste in music.

Of course, the music we like is important. Look at the music section of the member's profile. Not only will you learn everything you want to know about his or her music tastes and preferences, but also, you can immediately hear the music.
Learn more about how ASM works.

Retaking the Music Personality Test

You can retake the music test only one time per month. After receiving you initial score, you may immediately retake it. But, then cannot retake it until the following month.

Music Personality

    What is a Music Personality?

Music Personality identifies a person's overall personality. There are four distinct music personalities.

Amazingly, we each have distinct personality traits that are in common with and compatible with the traits of other people who like music in a similar way.

When we group together people with similar "music personalities," we are bringing together people with similar personality traits.

What are the 4 Music Personalities?

Diamond in the Rough - Devotee, fan, music lover, you've heard it all. You are passionate about music - a diverse assortment of music, and you love sharing it with everyone you know. If a band you like is in town, you're there — and you've been known to spontaneously travel to catch the next show. You've got a CD & MP3 collection bursting with cool mixes, live shows and rare releases (all legal, of course), and you rarely embark on a road trip without a selection of tunes you've painstakingly considered. You consider music a loyal friend.

Heart of Gold - People who know you might call you a music enthusiast. Mania would be a strong word, but music is definitely an important part of your life. You love music, try to stay alert about new artists and are known to pop into a record store on a whim and not leave empty-handed. You're keen on checking out shows whenever you can and pride yourself on having diverse musical taste. And, sometimes life makes music take a back seat and that's ok with you —you know you'll get back to it someday soon.

Shining Star - You've been known to buy a few CDs a year if you hear something that really strikes your fancy, yet you wouldn't go so far as to call music a hobby. You enjoy fiddling around the radio dial hoping to hear music you recognize rather than checking out what's new at college radio; you'll even catch a show or two during the year, usually of a band you've known about for a while. You might consider playing music while company is visiting, but music rarely takes center stage as the focal point of your social activities.

Unchained Melody - Music's great, but it's certainly not the most important thing in your life. Sure, you sing along when you know the song, but you're more likely to have the radio turned off, or playing quietly in the background while you do something else. You've been known to have a few Broadway musical CDs lying around the car and maybe even some oldies, classical or classic rock. You'll go to a concert if persuaded, but you can think of other ways that you'd prefer to spend your Saturday night. Like you said, music is great, but more often than not, it's preferred for the background.

Your Music Personality is also your Music Community. Meaning, you're likely to share common traits — attitudes, self-views, values, and personality characteristics — with other members of your community.

It is possible to be highly compatible with members of other communities and that's what our compatibility indicator is for — to let you know who are your strongest matches. Overall, we are compatible with people who belong to our community.

There is a forum dedicated to each music community. Visit the forum, meet your peers, exchange music, philosophies, film recommendations, etc. with each other. We think you'll find that you get along well with each other!

Your Matches

What are the notes I see next to a member's photo?

    The ASM Compatibility Indicator ("CI")

The note symbols you see on your results page and inside profiles (from 1 to 4 notes) is our Compatibility Indicator.

Our matching methodology calculates the ideal point spread between members and matches.

4 notes = Highest likelihood of compatibility
3 notes = Good chance of compatibility
2 notes = Less likely to be compatible
      1 note = Risky*

Behind the scenes, your survey result generates a score. It's also possible to have a high likelihood of compatibility with members who have different music personalities. That's why we developed the CI.

If you're concerned that your result isn't a true reflection of your music personality, you can retake the test. But, member can retake it only once a month. New members can retake the test after the first taking, but then not again until a month has passed).

Look under the "My Account" tab > "Retake the Test"

    Exclusive Listening

One small caveat for Diamonds in the Rough and Hearts of Gold:

We all know people who are uber-passionate about music, yet they are fond of only one kind — like classical or jazz or rap. These people score as big music lovers, and they also tend to have particular personality traits that correspond to the particular music they like.

As everyone is a perfect music lover, exclusive listening is fascinating and all good. However, when you see exclusive listening habits (Question #4 on the music profile), you might want to take a closer look to see if this person shares your overall views of the world.

    * What "Risky" means

See a one-note match on our compatibility indicator that you're just dying to meet? We say go for it ... with cautious optimism.

S/he might have been having an off test-taking day and this might have impacted the score. Though, even on an off day, scores don't significantly change.

All ASM members are entitled to meet and interact with each other. We believe in the theory that music predicts our compatibility. If someone you want to meet is an Unchained Melody and you are a Diamond in the Rough, it's likely that you'll each have a different view of the world. But, you can make the ultimate call.

What is the "Get to Know Me" Playlist ("GTKM")?

It's the music playlist that members select to reveal who they are.

The first 6 selections of the entire GTKM list travels with the snapshot you see in the results section. Go to the member's profile page to see their entire list.

This influential list expresses a member's personality and defines his/her history with music. The list is created with favorite bands, desert island records, and most meaningful songs in mind.

Note: INSIDE the emails you send, you'll choose songs from this list to send to other members.

My Search

How do I search for someone?

A Sound Match is designed to automatically match you with compatible people. Searching on specific terms may reduce your chances of finding that perfect match.

However, feel free to browse around and insert specific search terms and special preferences to narrow the number of matches that you receive.

Go to the top navigation bar tab Search > Advanced Search

How can I indicate my preferences?

Go to the top navigation bar tab My Account > My Preferences

How can I look up a particular member?

You can search by a person's profile nickname.

Why can't I search for both genders at one time?

Sorry, but for now you'll have to search for one gender at a time. The gender you indicated you were "looking for" when you took the test will appear in your search results. To search for the other gender, go to your "My Preferences" page and indicate you now want to search for the other gender.

Go to the top navigation bar tab My Account > My Preferences

    Can I save my searches?

Sorry, not right now. If you note the profile nickname of the people you like, you can always find their profiles by looking up their member name.

    Can I browse?

Go to the top navigation bar tab My Account > My Preferences

You can browse by deselecting the checkbox next to the word "Within" — this means we'll send you matches regardless of geography.

What are the characteristics & traits associated with each personality?

People often ask, "What are the specific personality traits that match up with each music community?" You can speak for yourselves.

On the basic profile, you are asked to select traits that describe yourself. We'll compile the results, categorize them by music personality, and will list the results once we've collected the data. Then, you can see for yourselves the self-described predominant traits associated with each music personality. Stay tuned for this feature.

But, as soon as you begin interacting with people who belong to a particular community, you'll begin to notice these characteristics and traits for yourself.

General Information

I'm having trouble saving my information

    Hit the "Save" button often!
Before you click off the profile pages or even leave a section, hit the "Save" button — this is the only way the information can post to our system.

    What is a profile "snapshot?"

Your snapshot is the information that members see in their search results. It contains:

    • Music Personality
    • Age
    • City
    • Compatibility Indicator
    • Get to Know Me playlist
    • What this music says about me

Why is there a basic + a music profile?

The basic profile is quick and takes care of all the "stats" you want to see about someone.

While most matching services ask you one question about your music preferences, we knew you had more to say about your music lifestyle. We created the music profile so that you could share your tastes, preferences and your music with other members!

The ASM music test reveals your interest in music. The music profile reveals your tastes and preferences... and gives you the chance to speak volumes about yourself.

Where do I go to fill out + edit my profile?

Go to the top navigation bar "My account" > Basic profile (or Music profile)

Why should I build a profile right away?

You can browse member profiles all you like, but if you want to contact another member or have them contact you, you'll want to complete the basic + the music profile. Otherwise, they'll have no information about you.

If I'm pressed for time, what information should I first complete?

Basic profile: 1st 3 sections are quick and easy: Basic, Physical, Lifestyle
Music Profile: 1st 2 sections appear in your matches search results: Get to Know Me playlist + What this music says about me

Do I have to complete the entire profile at one sitting?

No. You can provide however much detail you like. You can always return to "fine-tune" the information on the profile as often as you like.

We recommend you first complete section 1 of the music profile: the "Get to Know Me" playlist, and the question "What this music says about me." This playlist & paragraph travel with the profile snapshot that your matches will see on their results page.

      Is it clunky?

Um, a bit. But, making a mix for someone always has been. The bonus is... now you have access to millions of songs without having to buy them.

For now, we all have to cut and paste the links from the generator to the profile. (Hopefully, this'll change soon)

Can I hear music from the music profile?

No. To hear the music, go to your individual profile page, click any link that says "listen.""How do I hear the music?"

How do I hear the music?

You'll need to download the Rhapsody player to hear the music. Why you want to do this.

You can check it out for FREE for 2 weeks, no strings attached.

How do I get 2 FREE weeks of Rhapsody?

Click the link below. We'll take you to a Rhapsody page to begin downloading the player.

(Note: You will leave ASM and will interact entirely with Rhapsody at this point. Rhapsody will ask for a credit card #. You will not be charged if you cancel during the first 2 weeks).

Give yourself 10-15 minutes to focus on downloading the Rhapsody player. Sometimes it's smooth going. Sometimes it can be finicky.

After 2 weeks, you can cancel. If you haven't met your sound match by then, we suspect you'll have fallen in love with Rhapsody, for these reasons

The Link Generator window won't pop up, why?

Once you click on the Rhaplink Generator window (the blue button), it stays open until you close it. Often times, it is already open in another browser window.

Why isn't my song/album available as a Rhaplink?

Rhapsody's library is extensive. But, unfortunately, not every song that exists is available as a Rhaplink. However, they add new music every day, so check back often!
Remember, inserting the music link is not mandatory.

I've typed in the song name, but I get no results, why?

Make sure you've selected the right section of the generator.
Type in a song name for the "Track" section, type in the album name for the "Album" section, etc.

Sending & Receiving Emails from ASM members

    The ASM Member Email System

How does your anonymous system work?

Your email address will ALWAYS remain anonymous to others!

    Email between users

We encourage everyone to exchange music with each other! Even if the romance sparks aren't flying, you're bound to get turned on to great new music.

ASM is here to connect you with a community of people similar to yourself. The friendship potential is enormous. A Sound Match has been working hard to make sure your 3-4 note matches are "your type!" Soc you might want to think twice before you disregard another member as "not my type."

    Most importantly, please have fun!

What's the best way to say I'm not interested?

It's never easy to say we're not interested in someone. But, saying something is better than saying nothing. Be honest and kind and you can never go wrong.

You can send a quick note back with some music and write something about how you like their taste in music (if you do) and you don't see a romantic connection. Quick & painless. Your honesty might easily transition you two into a great friendship.

Please keep in mind that A Sound Match is designed to automatically match you with compatible people. No reason why you shouldn't continue sharing music with your 3-4 note matches.

Sometimes our online criteria can be stricter than if we had unexpectedly met face-to-face. You might be surprised that a match you wouldn't consider based on her/his "stats" might just be your sound match. Stay open to all the possibilities.

And, visit the forum to read tips on dating. Maybe someone's posted information that'll make it easier to say "no thanks."

    Email management
Why can't I see the email threads I've sent to a member?

Right now our email system is pretty bare bones. Because we are using an anonymous email system, we can't offer features that we intend to have in future versions. Please bear with it for now.

How can I manage my emails?

A few suggestions for how to manage your emails:

    For messages you send:

    A. Put your messages into one "draft" email in your personal email program.
Open a new email message, title it "ASM messages" (or something).
Save it to your Draft folder. It never goes anywhere and you can constantly open and add to it.
Before you send your ASM email message, copy & paste the message into the draft email.

    B. Open a word processing document and save your messages in one document.

    For messages you receive:
Create a folder in your personal email program, whenever you get an email titled "You've got A Sound Match mail!" put them here so you can easily access them.
